From Leah Haygood, 16 Nov 2004 Hi everyone, We recently got some good news that the Chesapeake Bay Trust provided a grant that will help install a green roof at Northwood High School. It's a relatively small pilot that will hopefully prove the technology for use in other schools and public buildings. A green roof usually consists of mats of vegetation installed on top of a roof. The plants provide insulation, protect the roof from extremes of temperature and absorb large quantities of rainwater that would otherwise run off and add to the stormwater burden on our streams and sewer systems. Several people from our community advocated for this project. The funding, however, won't cover all costs and there may be a call for volunteers to help get it up and going. Let me or Ed Murtagh (edward_b_murtagh@yahoo.com) know if you're interested in helping.
